The walk starts on the Sun Flats Road, approx. 1.4 km north of Poimena. A few hundred metres along the road a sign denoting the Mount Michael walking track is reached. The route initially follows the Three Notch Track, an old horse/walking track used by miners. Chinese miners in particular used this track to travel between Garibaldi and Weldborough, the main Chinese population centres.
About 750 metres along the Three Notch Track we turn off and ascend to the summit of Mt Michael (850m). The climb is gentle and passes through beautiful, mature myrtle forest. About 400m from the turn-off we emerge from the forest onto an open granite summit with spectacular 360 degree views.
The descent from the summit is short but initially steep with some boulders to negotiate. The Mt Michael tin mine, one of the largest on the Blue Tier, is reached after about 400m of descending. The mine hole is impressive and very deep – don’t fall in, we probably won’t be able to get you out! There are interpretation boards and relics around the site.
The walk continues along an old road, which was once a tramway, passing more relics and hut sites, before branching off and crossing Sun Creek. We follow this delightful creek, which shows some evidence of mine activity, back to the carpark on Sun Flats Road.
Total length of the walk is about 4.5km.
